Oh dear...

My bottom gum appears to be receding. I think I know why - there was a kissing-related incident a couple of weeks ago with my labret and the area's been hurting ever since but still, yikes. D:

Anyone know what I can do about it? I looked on BME Wiki and someone mentioned that using a CBR instead of a labret stud could stop it rubbing against the gums and prevent further erosion - think this is worth a shot? Any other ideas?

(visiting the dentist isn't an option right now - I'm not registered with one (still on a waiting list) so can only get treatment for emergencies)

I dunno much about BM, but it sounds viable from a technical standpoint. I couldn't put it into physical terms but just from a gut reaction it looks like it'd be less obstructive/abrasive/idk.

I'm not sure if this is in any way helpful for your situation, but what one of my friends did was get the piercing going straight upward through the lower lip, so it doesn't come in contact with her gums or teeth. (I don't know how quickly lip piercings heal or if you'd even wanna do that, so apologies if this is presumptuous.)

Disclaimer: I don't really know anything about piercings... so this might be a weird idea but what about a lower gumshield? I wore one on/off for a while as part of orthodontic treatment, technically I should still occasionally to keep the line. I've also seen people use them for DIY teeth whitening, something I fancy trying after I've found a dentist I like to sort out a couple of things. I have one molar on the upper jaw that gets iritated from teeth brushing sometimes and is red for weeks then it just settles and I'm okay for a while. Damn these imperfections

Oh man, I hear ya. I have mad gum recession. My teeth look like vampire fangs or some shit. I can't really think of any solution though, besides just taking the piercing out altogether. :/

I had to remove my labret altogether because of this issue, and I think that would be the best option until you can see a dentist about it. From everything that I've read about it, if your gum recedes to the point that you have sensitivity or other issues, it's not going to get better without dental surgery to graft new tissue onto the spot from some other place in your mouth.

In my opinion, it's not a risk worth taking.

I had three labrets but now only have one, and I have a ring in it just for comfort. My gums are already pretty receded but I don't really care, lol. My advice is to get a CBR that's fitted to your lip snugly, but not too snug. I'm not sure offhand the dimensions of the rings, but if you weren't across the pond I'd lend you a spare, lol. I have... quite a collection of random piercing jewelry I don't use anymore now that I've taken out about half my piercings. I used to have ~30 and am now down to 15.

Also, if you have it, I'm using the straight bars with balls on each end for my snakebites, which would also work to prevent erosion in your gums. However, anything with a round back can slip through if you're not careful. I personally prefer rings, but my snakebites are a pain in the ass to get rings in myself, so I used the bars.

You're just going to have to remove it, I think. :(

Sometimes people get a middle lip piercing and use a stud rather than a labret to avoid the gum receding-ness.

ETA: Try [livejournal.com profile] bodymods? Just a warning - they're fierce as fuck and do not hesitate to make fun of you for any reason.
