K, off to the doctors and then it's voting time. While a Lib/Lab coalition would definitely be the best option, what's really important is keeping the Tories out. We should know by now that no good comes of them being in power.

I just hope most of the country feels the same way, ridiculous Obamaron Sun front page notwithstanding.

I actually hadn't sat down to properly analyze this race, but I'll be watching coverage as best I can. Considering the time difference, though, you may have decided a leader before I can get home from work today.

I did mean to keep my LJ updated with election coverage (mainly in revenge for the US 2008 one's constant coverage), but decided to concentrate on posting it to [livejournal.com profile] ontd_political as people who'd actually be interested. ^^;

General gist of it: at first, it seemed like it was going to be a two horse race between the Tories and Labour as usual, with the Tories getting a runaway victory, but then the TV debates happened and the Lib Dems showed themselves to be a viable third party in the polls. Now they're all doing pretty much the same (Tories have a slight lead, but not enough for a majority government), but due to our voting system the Lib Dems won't get nearly as many seats as they rightly should. The sensible hope is for Labour and the Lib Dems to form a coalition government, as the Lib Dems want to introduce a new, fairer voting system that will make future elections less broken. It's anyone's guess what will happen tonight though, it's that close.

Unless you're very late back you'll probably catch it - the polls close at 10PM BST (so 5PM for you, I think), and the results come in throughout the night after that.

I had heard that Clegg fellow did well in the debate. Canada's system is the same (you can get a significant percent of the votes, but still have almost no seats in parliament).

A few years ago there was talk of a merger between two left parties in Canada, but the idea of a coalition government in the country was such a foreign idea that it never went through.

Yeah, after I posted that, I found where it said the polls close at 10. That surprised me a bit, because its about an hour later than we had in most recent Canadian elections, if I remember correctly. Is your media allowed to report results at any time? We had a ban for some time because we have six time zones and the east coast was thought to unfairly influence later voting in the west.

Yeah, they generally report them as soon as they get word (normally begins about an hour after the polls close) - we're only in one timezone so that's not a worry.

Same (although there wasn't much choice and I doubt we'll be able to get shot of the incumbent anyway)

Love that Chomsky quote*. Lol, just managed to roll out of bed.

Hope it turns out alright for you guys. I have to read infuriating shit our Conservatives (I'm Canadian) are doing back home and it makes me raaaaaage.
