The Moon

The moon brings madness - that's what he was always told. Something about its sickly, pallid light stirred the primal instincts of those who gazed upon it, making them do what they never ordinarily would.

She was like nothing he'd ever seen before. Under the grim effulgence of the moon her skin appeared a ghostly grey-white, stark contrast to the lunatic fire in her amber eyes. He thought he should fear her; run as fast as he could from her burning gaze, but his feet seemed to have become welded to the spot, leaving him with nothing but a panicked gasp.

She appeared to see his terror; her stolid veneer cracking momentarily in disappointed misery.

And then he truly saw. That which he had taken for madness in her eyes really loss; the abject pain of one too proud to show it.

Shad entered the moonlight.

He stood there, grinning like a lobotomised chimp, looking at Shad expectantly for simpering appraisals and fawning worship, but Shad stared back coldly. Surely he couldn't be expecting him to be grateful, could he? Was the boy's hero complex so ingrained that any kill he performed was seen as "good", even when uncalled for, unwanted and, quite frankly, none of his damn business?

Shad held back the tears as his twitching undead lover faded from existence.
