savioursephSomething from a while back I only just got round to ending.
Ilia stood in the kitchen, peeling potatoes to be chipped and thrown into boiling lard for supper. She surveyed the house; kind of grubby-looking, but she didn't really seem bothered about keeping a nice house these days. Gaggle of noisy, delinquent children clustered around the dingy set in the corner, furiously pressing small colourful buttons and berating the flashing images on the screen with words she was sure she never uttered at their age. Old photographs beneath nicotine-stained glass dotted haphazardly around the walls. Photographs from before: before the boring domesticity; before the noisy demanding children. Before her husband degenerated into the overweight, lazy bloater he had become when his destiny was fulfilled, his life purposeless. Before the manboobs and the round-the-clock five-o'clock shadow.
Before he stopped caring.
Ilia found herself looking with fresh eyes; the eyes from the photographs, and her gorge rose in frustrated disgust. This wasn't her dream! It wasn't even close! Where had her life gone?
She picked up the sizzling pan from the stove top and walked calmly into the living room. She knew what she had to do.
She never shed another tear.
EDIT: Pretty sure the prompt was 'manboobs' actually (also that I was listening to Cell Block Tango from Chicago when I wrote it, which might explain a few things ^^; )

And I totally thought of you when I saw a couple of holes in our pumpkin patch during the fall. Couldn't quite look my mom's boyfriend in the eye that day.
