 I knew I should have binned that ruptured laptop battery. Damn my concern for the environment stopping me from doing so. One of the cells finally burst and let out a load of gas. I've moved Aragog into the bedroom so he's as far away as possible, but I'm still kind of worried - it's probably not a good thing to have unknown gases floating around a flat that I can't ventilate for fear of the cat escaping.

Any idea what it would be, and whether it's harmful or not? It was a Lithium Ion battery from a Macbook Pro, and the gas kind of smells like methanol, if that helps.

D:

I have no suggestions. But D: Do you have a kennel for the cat you can put her in for like an hour or so and then open all the windows and doors and turn on a fan?

I've got a carrier that I use when I take him to the vets - of course, whether I can get him into it is another matter altogether. ^^;

Yeah, that's what I meant. Just put a snack in there and lure him in, and then just shut the door and do all the venting you need. If he meows pathetically just wuv him extra hard when he comes out (even though he will probably scratch your face off)

If it's a standard Li-Ion or LiP-Ion (probably a LiP, unless it's an old MacBook), it's nothing overly dangerous; it'll only cause a minor irriation, as it's a gaseous form of... some form of Lithium salt (my chem-math fails at the moment). Still, I would recommend trying to get the insane-killer-cat stowed away and air the place out.

You know, just to be on the safe side.

It was a LiPo battery, yeah (the cells were foil pouches). Not much luck finding out what it was that came out of it - all I can find is "hydrogen and some other stuff" (and that, due to the presence of polyacrylonitrile in the battery, cyanide formation is possible - it didn't smell like cyanide though, don't worry).

Anyway, it's dealt with now - battery's outside in the bin and the flat's been well and truly aired out. :)

It isn't much to worry about so long as you don't shove your face in it and inhale deeply, repeatedly, and extensively. (It's not a likely formation in normal room environments, much less in lethal concentrations - remember as well that cyanide disperses pretty quickly, even in a moderate sized room.)

TL;DR it isn't a big deal in 99.999% of cases, but UGH the mess is so gross. *hugs?*

Also, also: KH-FM(1) is freaking awesome, even though not having Guard until level 15 was decidedly NOT.
