I think The Shining was a great film adaptation. I mean, it was just that, an adaptation but it really captured the spirit of the book with some token alterations.

If anything, compare it to the later TV-miniseries adaptation that played the book straight, very straight. It dragged, was kinda languid, and lacked the tension or energy of the movie. That kind of book tension that King's so good at doesn't adapt to screen so well sometimes haha. It's telling that some of his best movie adaptations are from short stories as such.
